Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic therapy is the most effective treatment for acne, sun-damage, unwanted pigment, rosacea, actinic keratosis and even pre-cancerous skin lesions.

Until recently acne management has been fraught with difficult and complicated treatment regimens. Patients either apply topical medications or combine topicals with oral antibiotics. Some patients do not want to do these regiments or are not helped by them. Now we have a modality to treat acne patients called ALA photodynamic therapy.

How does it work?
A solution containing 5-Aminolevulinic Acid (ALA) is applied topically to the skin. This medication is absorbed down through the dermis at a predictable rate and is absorbed more quickly by fast replicating cells like actinic keratosis and pre-cancerous cells and makes acne-causing bacteria P. acnes photoactive, allowing a special light, IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) to target and kill the bacteria. ALA-PDT also inhibits sebum production by reducing sebaceous glands. The procedure takes about 90 minutes and produces results that for many are superior to existing treatments.

PDT points

  • ALA-PDT provides an effective means to treat conditions like acne, sun-damage, unwanted pigments, rosacea, actinic keratosis and pre-cancerous skin lesions.
  • ALA-PDT can target individual cells and destroy them.
  • ALA-PDT can be used anywhere on the body.
  • ALA-PDT is FDA approved.

Results/side effects:
Patients generally need three treatments to have the desired outcome. The results have been impressive.

There is some discomfort that most patients tolerate well without any topical or oral medication. Patient satisfaction is high. Patients can develop redness and a little swelling that subsides in a couple of hours to a couple of days. You must be prepared to stay out of the sun for 24 to 48 hours. Sun block with SPF 58 or higher is recommended for use before and after the treatment and each day that follows. Not recommended if you are pregnant.
